Enjoying Home in Busy Seasons

For a long time now, busy has become my normal. As a wife, mother to five children, full-time broker, friend, etc., I am familiar with wearing many hats at once, making my life appear a little (okay maybe a lot) crazy to the onlooking stranger. This life is not for everyone, but I wouldn’t trade it for anything. I love that I get to do what I’m passionate about, while also come home to a husband and family of strong convictions, deep love, and a large dose of goofy. Each journey is different, unique to the individual, and I enjoy the lane I’m in. Every day is filled with its rhythms and curveballs, and if there’s one thing I’ve learned it’s that there is always more to learn.

Before I took on this Real Estate adventure, I was a stay at home mom. I loved spending my days in my haven…cooking, cleaning, and creating a safe place for my family to grow in. During this season of life, my home sparkled. With so much time to pay attention to the little things, my laundry was always done, the dishes always clean, and the pillows always fluffed. If this is what your day-to-day life looks like, enjoy it! I look back on this time in my life with a smile, thankful for the opportunities I had to be home. Nowadays, it is a little different. With long work hours, kids turned into teenagers, and a million things to do…sometimes my home is more parts chaos than peace. I’m learning all the time that though my presence in the home is not what it was, that does not mean I can’t care for it little by little! Instead of long cleaning days, or hours to work on a home project, I’ve discovered the art of chipping away at things over time. A few piles of folded laundry is always better than none, and if I have to wait until Monday to dust our furniture…it will be okay! As I often joke, “No one is going to die!”

Perfection is not an attainable goal, all I can do is the best I can do! Some days, that looks like everything put neatly in its place, and on others? Well, we’ll find the remote controller eventually. (Insert: no one is going to die!) Life has its seasons, and in this one, I’m improving at giving myself grace with this. I’m sure it’s a safe bet to say that you could use some grace too. Maybe your home isn’t spotless, or maybe it is…but wherever you land, we must fight to enjoy the homes we occupy! Do what you can, extend yourself some grace, and then enjoy. Don’t resent what you didn’t get to…celebrate what you accomplished!

This is what I can say with ultimate certainty: my home looks lived in; and I would choose that reality…of water bottles on the counter, socks on the stairs, and backpacks by the door, over any museum.

So today, I’m committing to balance. When I walk into my home after work, I’m going to use a little bit of elbow grease, show a lot of grace, and savor some quiet before the circus rolls in. Who knows, maybe I’ll get a little wild and light a candle? Pour a glass of wine? Sounds like a plan to me.

Go…enjoy your home, in all of its imperfect glory. Life’s too short not to.
